How Do I Get Organized – Slight Persistent Effort

4

Do you get overwhelmed just thinking about

How To Get Organized?

The overwhelming feeling that comes to most people who have asked themselves this question over and over again without getting anything done is well…overwhelming.  Do you ever stand in the middle of your cluttered area and get frozen?  Don’t know where to begin? Don’t know how to begin? Are you stuck?  Does the question, how do I get organized spin around in your head?

The answer to this question is “slight persistent effort,” continuous progress in small increments and you begin with any one of the ideas I’m going to share with you in this post.

1. The Trashy Easy Pickens

Grab a trash bag and choose one area; kitchen, living room, office etc.  Set a timer for 5 minutes and pick up EVERYTHING that you can easily see as trash.  If you have to think about it leave it there.  When the timer goes off set it for another 5 and go back through looking for more trash.  You may not pick up as much the next time because in this round you may have to think about it – that’s OK.  Remind yourself, how do I get organized?….”slight persistent effort”

2. Gather & Group

Grab an empty bin or box and set your timer for 5 minutes.  Go through your space and pick up as many like items as possible; if in the office pick up office supplies or craft supplies or photos & frames, in the living room pick up books & toys or kids clothing.  In the kitchen pick up mail & coupons or empty cans & jars.

3. The Ruler Rule

How do I get organized?  “Slight persistent effort.”  Take a ruler and measure out a one-square foot spot on your desk or kitchen counter and focus only on that area.  Put things away or designate a home for them.  Don’t forget to set your timer so don’t get lost in your project!

Share your favorite method and your success with applying it!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for these simple, practical tips. You so “get it” in terms of giving us digestible tips that won’t overwhelm but will get results. Love them and using them today in fact in both my office and bedroom closet! Looking forward to reading more of your post….!

Ooh, Kelli, such great tips. I forgot the power of the timer! I love gather and group. My issue has always been trying to do too much. What happens is I take everything out, try and sort, and then get overwhelmed and quit.

Then I have everything out on the floor and just walk over it for a couple of weeks until I can get the mental energy to complete it.

Recently I hired someone to help me organize. It makes me twitch when I have to sit and go through one item at a time, only handle once, and keep going. But I am grateful for the little areas under control!

Thanks for your “slight persistent effort.” I have the slight and effort down. It’s the persistent part that seems to be my issue!

    Can’t wait to read more.

  3. Kelli -

These are great tips. All four of us have a drawer, basket, spot downstairs that is our catch all for clutter. Then at the end of the day, at the end of the week, or when it is full, we have to put everything away. It keeps our downstairs tidy and it’s easy for the kids :)

  4. HI Kelli,

I LOVE tip number one! My husband and I have a saying around our house…

“It doesn’t take as long as you think!” Which is what I thought of when I read your post. It’s TRULY amazing how much you can get done in just 5 minutes with a bit of focused effort.

    Thanks for this handy reminder!
